Why Gut-Friendly Food is Not Leaving Us Anytime Soon

The COVID-19 pandemic indeed changed the living style of many of us including our diet habits. While some people have started taking boiling water others have stockpiled yeast to make homemade bread. More and more scientific studies are indeed supporting gut friendly food as it helps us in reducing cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol. Overall, the food trend of 2021 has various implications for future generations as well and whether we agree or not, the pandemic has taught us how we can live healthily through our practices like consuming gut-friendly food.

What is gut friendly food?

Whatever we eat impacts the bacteria system in our gut, also know as the microbiome that influences our healthy lifestyle significantly. A healthy gut not just keeps chronic diseases away but also keeps cancer and heart diseases at bay. Gut friendly food can reduce inflammation, keep our brains working properly and helps in maintaining a good body shape. So, it’s never too late to start with gut-friendly food to support your gut bugs!

Probiotics

Probiotics are one form of good bugs which can be easily found in fermented food like miso, yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi. By eating these, probably you will be able to balance your gut microbes effectively thereby reducing chances of diarrhea and skin diseases. 

Sauerkraut

Among various gut friendly food, sauerkraut is one food which is made of salt and cabbage. When fermenting the cabbage with salt, the microorganisms eat the sugar in the cabbage and releases acids and carbon dioxide. The probiotic created in the fermentation process adds good bugs to your gut and helps in food digestion.  Kimchi is also a form of fermented cabbage and can be added to our meals comprising rice, veggies and an egg.

Kefir

Kefir is like liquid yogurt and made with kefir grains that are fermented with sugar and milk. Kefir is like a probiotic and can be fermented with or without sugar besides it makes a tasty healthy breakfast smoothy too. Kombucha, on the other side, is a fizzy tea made by a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. It has to be added with sugar and black or green tea which is then fermented for more than a week. During the fermentation process, alcohol is released along with gases that give kombucha natural carbonation.

Chia seeds 

Chia seed is one of the greatest sources of dietary fibres. When you consume chia seeds, it produces a substance in your stomach which looks like a gel. This gel works like a probiotic that supports and develops good bacterial flow within the intestine. The fibre produced by chia seeds clears constipation also which ultimately solves your constipation related issues.

Miso

Miso is yet another gut friendly food that is made out of fermented soya beans. Miso has probiotics that improve digestion besides healing our intestinal illnesses. Miso is more abundantly used in Japanese dishes such as soups and salads since it tastes salty. Most miso is produced in Japan and it is used in the country since the 8th century or earlier. You can find more than 1000 kinds of miso varying in colours, textures and flavours which is influenced by the fermentation process and the conditions they are kept in.

Sourdough

Sourdough is indeed very fashionable today because of many reasons. It is another gut friendly food that is made out of the fermentation process and is more digestible than other bread forms. You can make fantastic toasts with sourdough or slow-fermented bread. One of the main features of sourdough is that, unlike other bread, it can be made at home without using any commercial yeast to rise the dough. It tastes tangy, crisp, chewy with the crackly crust which tastes darn good. Scientifically, this gut-friendly food develops good acids and the fermentation process breaks unnecessary gluten, making the bread more digestible for our body.
